What does the rotary kiln do in spodumene processing?

In a conventional spodumene extraction route, the first major thermal step converts naturally occurring α-spodumene into a more reactive β-spodumene phase. This step is often called calcination or decrepitation. It prepares the mineral for subsequent chemical treatment; it does not, by itself, produce purified lithium carbonate.

The distinction matters when specifying equipment. A kiln designed to heat spodumene concentrate for phase conversion has a different duty from equipment used later for acid roasting. The mineral, required temperature, atmosphere and materials exposed to the process must be defined for each step.

This article describes the sequence for a spodumene concentrate processed by a sulfuric-acid route. Other lithium minerals and extraction methods need separate process assessment.

The exact equipment train and operating conditions depend on the concentrate and the chosen extraction process. The table is a process outline, not a fixed recipe.

Prepare a consistent kiln feed

A rotary kiln should receive spodumene concentrate characterized for lithium content, mineral composition, particle-size distribution and moisture. Variations in feed can change how material heats and moves through the kiln.

Feed preparation and metering should support a stable rate. If the proposed process includes grinding, drying or blending, define where those steps occur and what condition the material must reach before entering the kiln. Limestone or sodium carbonate should not be treated as standard additions to the phase-conversion step: their use depends on a specific, tested process route.

For an equipment inquiry, representative feed samples and test results are more useful than a nominal throughput figure alone.

Control phase conversion in the kiln

As the inclined kiln rotates, its internal bed advances from the feed end toward discharge while receiving heat. The objective is to give the material a suitable thermal history for α-to-β spodumene conversion without creating avoidable processing problems.

Temperature and residence time must be considered together. If part of the feed is insufficiently heated, phase conversion may be incomplete. Excessive heating can also affect material behavior and kiln operation. Feed size, kiln loading, rotation and heat distribution all influence how uniformly the material is treated.

Published process descriptions commonly place spodumene phase conversion at temperatures above 1,000°C. That figure is background context, not a setpoint for a specific kiln. The operating window should be established through mineral testing and process design for the actual concentrate.

Kiln design also requires attention to the shell, refractory lining, support arrangement, drive and seals. Refractory selection and the treatment of the kiln ends should follow the temperature profile, material properties and gas conditions. A water-cooled kiln head, for example, is a design option only when the application calls for it; it is not an inherent part of every spodumene kiln.

Keep downstream extraction steps distinct

After phase conversion, the calcined material is discharged, cooled or conditioned as required, and transferred for chemical treatment. In a conventional sulfuric-acid route, β-spodumene is mixed with acid and roasted so that lithium can subsequently be recovered through water leaching. Acid roasting is a separate process duty and may use a different thermal equipment configuration from the high-temperature phase-conversion kiln.

The leached solution then needs further treatment to remove impurities and produce the intended lithium compound. Lithium carbonate, if it is the target product, is obtained through these downstream solution-processing steps. It is not collected directly from a dust collector at the kiln outlet.

Dust collection manages entrained particulate in the relevant gas stream. Gas treatment requirements must be determined from the actual fuel, feed, reagents and emissions assessment. A dust collector should not be described as removing every gaseous contaminant.

Which operating conditions matter most?

A useful kiln specification should define the process target and the conditions needed to achieve it:

  • Feed properties: mineralogy, particle size, moisture and expected variation.
  • Production duty: required feed rate, operating hours and start-stop pattern.
  • Thermal requirement: target phase conversion and the basis for the proposed temperature profile and residence time.
  • Material movement: bed behavior, kiln inclination, rotational speed and discharge requirements.
  • Gas and dust conditions: fuel or heating method, gas flow, entrained dust and applicable treatment requirements.
  • Downstream interface: required temperature and condition of the calcined product before the next step.

Instrumentation and controls can help maintain a stable feed rate, temperature profile and kiln speed. Variable-speed drives and automated controls should be selected around the process requirements; their presence alone does not establish lithium recovery or final product purity.

Define the process before specifying the kiln

The first question is which part of lithium processing the rotary kiln is expected to perform. For spodumene, high-temperature phase conversion and subsequent acid roasting must be described as distinct duties. A proposal should be supported by concentrate data, a process flow, the target conversion and the required operating capacity.

Changzheng’s heavy equipment catalog describes configurable rotary kilns for mineral and chemical thermal processing. Suitability for a particular spodumene process, including the heating method, lining, discharge and gas-handling arrangement, requires an application-specific engineering review.
